Amy Degen

When did you start surfing?
About four years ago.

Why did you start surfing?
I went through a really tough break up, and wanted to do something just for me. So I thought I would try something that I had always wanted to do, but was too afraid. It really gave me something else to focus on in a difficult time, and changed my life.

Kid's Day at the Beach, 2007.

Shortboard or longboard?
It depends on the day.

Where is your favorite place to surf?
Brown House or Pump House.

Who is you favorite shaper?
Right now, I'm in love with my Sean Austin board. Actually, I've loved it for a while.

What's your favorite aspect about SDSL?

All the wonderful friends I have made.

Has anyone influenced your surfing?
Everyone influences me. I try to learn something from everyone.

Where have you traveled to surf?
Baja, Hawaii, and Costa Azul.

Have you surfed competitively? If so, what kind of results?

No, I don't think I would want to do any competitions. I would probably take it too seriously.

How does surfing affect you?
It changes my mood. Whatever mood I go into the water with is definately altered when I get out. I can always tell if it has been a few days since I surfed, because my temper gets really short, and I tend to be a bit bitchy.

If you were to tell a newbie some advice, what would it be?

Go as often as you can.

What's the weirdest thing you've ever seen or experienced while surfing?

I saw a guy swim right through the line up, fully clothed with a stuffed backpack on, and pushing a skateboard. He was swimming out to a boat a few dozen feet away. Just kinda random.

What's on your iPod?

What isn't on my iPod? The song it's on right now is Scandal, "Goodbye to You!" It's a great song to get over someone.
